Harriman – Red Cross Trail

Hiked:

9.5 miles. Usual Harriman trail; rocky, many streams, scenic views in spots, overall nice hiking.

Parking lot on Tiorati Road, south of Tiorati circle, on the left just past an abandoned ball field. No facilities. Seasonal facilities at Tiorati Circle were closed, need to use main visitor or silvermine one.

ROUTE: RED CROSS north from Tiorati Road an easy 2 miles to YELLOW (Menomeme); then a gradual climb to WHITE (AT) at Wm Brien Shelter; steep up to WHITE then levels with views of Silvermine Lake; then views at summit of Black Mtn; south and somewhat steep and very leafy down to BLUE (1979 Trail).

1979 an easy mossy trail with traffic noise, to junction with Owl Lake woods road. Could have taken Owl to RED but continued on BLUE and was going to take it across the highway to make a loop but there was no safe way across the highway.

Opted not to play frogger across Rt. 87 and bushwhacked south to pick up RED CROSS. Followed back east, past the junction with YELLOW again to parking lot.
