Hiking Cheesequake State Park’s Green Trail with a few inches of snow.
Also, the boardwalk through the cedar swamp is now repaired.
We decided to grab a quick hike at Cheesequake State Park as the snow started falling on Saturday.
The temperature was somewhere in the 20s but it was beautiful out, sunny and very comfortable.
Detailed hike guide on our main Cheesequake Green Trail page.
There was already a few inches on the trails and the snow was pretty grippy for the most part but there were some small, compacted areas that were pure ice. So, since I am on the clumsy side, I decided to put on my MICROspikes.
If you aren’t familiar with micro-spikes, these are basically snow chains for your feet… a metal chain with little spikes is attached to a rubber frame that is stretched over a hiking boot (we’ve got a review of MicroSpikes too).
They grab snow and ice like crazy and take winter hiking to the next level.
We just did the Green Trail which is around 3-ish miles. The boardwalk that snakes through the cedar swamp is now finished being re-built, and the trail no longer detours around it.
The entire boardwalk in this area was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. A lot of the trees are down, so it while it’s not the same it was still nice to see it back (it’s our fave part of the park).
Bonus: Santa arrived with much fanfare via a firetruck while we were at WaWa on the way home, and one of Santa’s fireman-helpers gave us candy canes – nice!
