The New Year’s Day forecast was initially calling for sunny skies but when we woke to no sun and heavy wind gusts we made a game-day substitution to head to John Phillips Preserve.

We wanted to do another challenging hike so we headed out to Splitrock, which we hadn’t done since 2015.
This hike serves up a long series of some of the best vistas in the state but it’s not for beginners.
Plenty of viewpoints and cascades along a stream but you have to work for it as the trails go up and down over multiple peaks.
We were looking to get in a somewhat long workout hike with hills but no more than an hour away – and Round Valley fits the bill.
