Cheesequake State Park – Green Trail
We frequent this park year round; it offers really nice hiking without having to drive too far.
Trail Blogs are casual posts about a particular hike, sometimes with a seasonal focus. They don’t contain the detailed step-by-step instructions and information that our hike guides feature.
For example – the hike guide for Mt. Tammany has detailed instructions but also links to the multiple Trail Blogs about our various hikes up Mt. Tammany over the years (i.e. “Mt. Tammany and Sunfish Pond in the Fall“).

Hiking Mt. Tammany then taking the fire road to Sunfish Pond.
Hiking Hoeferlin and Cannonball Trails in Ramapo Mountain State Forest.
The scrambling sections were more fun and less dicey the other direction.
Nice views 360 views at summit, including NYC, would be be especially nice for fall foliage.
Trail is usual rocky Highlands with a lot of mild up/downs with views of the Reservoir.
BLUE to RED at Kay, cross the road follow around, cross the road again, walk up the drive to KAY then pick up BLUE again.
Good to do a long distance hike, mostly level along the ridge with some elevation changes along the way. 16.6 miles, 7.5 hours.
BLUE trail along the river (very scenic, lots of people take this pleasant walk but don’t go very far) then to Kay Environmental center. 14.8 miles.
Took ORANGE up steeply for 1 mile. Arrive N of Sunfish Pond and pick up the AT here. We followed it N where it follows the ridge. 16 miles (new record)
Wouldn’t recommend this route, traffic noise at parts, trail wasn’t bad, a little overgrown and grassy, just not very scenic. We wanted to get some basic miles in to train for a trip so it met its purpose, but wouldn’t go again.
Sterling Ridge/Highlands Trail which was very nice and a couple nice viewpoints. Arrived at the Fire Tower and climbed that for nice views.
Hiking Mt. Tammany to Sunfish via the Fire Road and returning by Dunnfield Creek.
Very hot out but not as bad hiking as we thought. Starting to prep for fall hiking.
Since it was Saturday and hunting season, we headed to Harriman where there is no hunting.
